Research and Development

Research Lab

The Health Protection Agency will apply the best science possible in support of its responsibility to protect the health of the country. In all cases our Research and Development (R&D) activities will be dedicated to making a difference that helps to improve the health and well-being of all members of the population.

Why is R&D important to the Health Protection Agency?

R&D is a key activity of the Health Protection Agency and is essential for its continued credibility, viability and vitality. R&D underpins the work of the Agency and is strongly supported by the Board. It has the potential to rapidly establish inter-disciplinary working, and as such contributes to development of a distinct identity for the Agency.

The Health Protection Agency provides a broad range of specialist services for health protection and public health, covering infectious diseases, radiation and chemicals. In carrying out our health protection functions the Agency undertakes R&D from the very small (molecular) to the very large (population) across all three of these key areas.
