HPA Porton undertakes both basic and applied research into understanding infectious diseases, as well as  translational research in conjunction with our partners in  industry and academia in order to develop and test interventions for public health, including  new products such as vaccines and diagnostics..

The site also plays an important role in preparing for and co-ordinating responses to potential healthcare emergencies, including possible acts of deliberate release.
 

• Research, testing, evaluation
  We undertake basic research into understanding infectious diseases and the development of healthcare products on behalf of the UK government.
• Contract Research and Biopharmaceutical Manufacture
  A diverse range of clients utilise our contract research, developmental production, manufacturing  and service capabilities, to develop healthcare orientated products such as new vaccines and therapeutics. We also provide expert advice and testing capabilities to many areas of industry.
• Emergency Preparedness and Response
  The Emergency Response Department works to improve the UK's emergency response capability, developing the infrastructure for surveillance and early recognition of events. To improve preparedness we run training courses and co-ordinate emergency exercises to provide testing of plans. Staff in the department provide evidence-based risk assessment work to help advise the Department of Health, Health Protection Agency and related sister agencies and departments on policy, contingency planning and public health countermeasures ahead of time in relation to new and (re)emerging infectious disease threats, including those posed by bioterrorism. We also produce Information and guidelines for the public and health professionals about " deliberate releases" – the intentional spread of a biological or chemical agent, such as might occur in a biowarfare or bioterrorist incident.
• New and Emerging Diseases
  We are constantly on the lookout for new or re-emerging infectious diseases that might be introduced into the UK. We aim to identify and assess the threats posed by such diseases so that we can provide expert advice and develop countermeasures.
• Culture Collections
  The Agency has four international culture collections which can supply bacteria, cells, fungi and viruses.
