The laboratory is CPA-accredited and in addition to its HPA function offers a full range of microbiology and virology tests. It processes approximately 1,500,000 specimens per year including those from primary care, external contracts and environmental health departments.

As part of the HPA's Laboratory Network, the laboratory provides public health microbiology services to communicable disease control consultants in local Health Protection Units (including specimen processing, outbreak management and advice). Results for around 80% of tests are available within three days.
