Key Points

Fire

  • Highly flammable
  • Reactions with rust, iron, permanganic acid, nitrogen oxide, chlorine, sodium, and potassium-sodium alloys can lead to explosive decomposition
  • Emits toxic fumes of sulphur oxides and carbon monoxide when heated to decomposition
  • In the event of a fire involving carbon disulphide, use fine water spray and liquid tight chemical protective clothing with breathing apparatus

Health

  • Toxic by inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact
  • CHIP: Highly flammable, reproductive toxin, toxic and irritant
  • Possible reproductive toxin, toxic and irritant
  • Inhalation causes irritation to the respiratory tract with coughing, wheezing and dyspnoea
  • Ingestion causes irritation to mucous membranes with nausea and vomiting
  • Dermal exposure causes irritation, erythema and skin peeling
  • Systemic effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, nervousness and tremor. In severe cases there may be drowsiness, coma and convulsions
  • Ocular exposure causes immediate severe irritation

Environment

  • Avoid release into the environment
  • Inform Environment Agency of substantial incidents
