Hydrazine

Key Points

Fire

  • Flammable
  • Reacts violently with many metals, metal oxides and porous materials causing fire and explosion hazard. Very dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat, flame or oxidising agents.
  • Emits toxic fumes of ammonia, hydrogen and nitrogen oxides when heated to decomposition
  • In the event of a fire involving hydrazine use alcohol resistant foam, if not available, fine water spray can be used and liquid tight chemical protective clothing with breathing apparatus

Health

  • Toxic by inhalation or ingestion
  • CHIP: Carcinogen, toxic and corrosive
  • Inhalation causes respiratory tract irritation, cyanosis, anoxia and pulmonary oedema.
  • Ingestion causes nausea, vomiting, anorexia, hypoglycaemia, CNS stimulation, seizures and coma.
  • Dermal exposure causes skin irritation and burns.
  • Ocular exposure causes eye irritation, conjunctivitis, burns and severe eye damage. Exposure to high concentrations may cause temporary blindness persisting for approximately 24 hours.

Environment
