Manganese

Key Points

Fire

  • Non-flammable, but dust or powder is flammable
  • Reacts with aqueous solutions of sodium or potassium bicarbonate
  • On heating, reacts directly with carbon, phosphorous, antimony or arsenic
  • Reacts with dilute mineral acids with liberation of hydrogen and formation of divalent manganous salts
  • Decomposes in water slowly in the cold, rapidly on heating

Health

  • Toxic via inhalation and ingestion
  • Inhalation causes irritation of the lungs and increases the susceptibility to infection
  • Inhalation my cause irritation and metal fume fever. Symptoms include cough, sore throat, chest tightness, headache and fever
  • Ingestion of large doses causes gastrointestinal irritation

Environment

  • Avoid release into the envionment
  • Inform the Environment Agency of substantial releases
