Phthalates - Incident Management

Key Points

Fire

  • Combustible
  • Diisononylphthalate (DINP) and Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) are stable under normal conditions
  • DINP may violently react with oxidising agents and DEHP with strong oxidising agents, acids and alkalis and nitrates
  • DINP and DEHP emit acrid smoke and toxic fumes when heated to decomposition

Health

  • DEHP and DINP are toxic via inhalation, ingestion or dermal absorption
  • Ingestion of DEHP may cause irritation of the stomach and diarrhoea
  • DINP has low acute toxicity

Environment

  • Avoid release into the environment
  • Inform Environment Agency of substantial incidents
