Tetrachloroethylene

Fire

  • Non combustible
  • Reacts with strong acids and oxidising agents
  • Emits toxic fumes of hydrogen chloride and phosgene when heated to decomposition
  • In the event of a fire involving tetrachloroethylene, use fine water spray and normal fire kit with breathing apparatus

Health

  • Toxic by inhalation and ingestion
  • Possible carcinogen
  • Symptoms following ingestion or inhalation include dizziness, drowsiness and coma
  • Inhalation can cause irritation to the nose and throat
  • Ingestion causes a burning of the mouth and throat and stomach upset
  • Irritating to the skin and eyes

Environment

  • Dangerous for the environment
  • Inform Environment Agency of substantial incidents
