Mandatory reporting of meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia and Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has been in place for National Health Service (NHS) acute Trusts for several years. Independent Sector (IS) hospitals began reporting MRSA bacteraemia and CDI, from January 2008. In January 2011 this scheme was extended to include surveillance of MSSA bacteraemia and E. coli bacteraemia in June 2011.
Whilst reporting guidelines and case definitions for IS organisations and NHS acute Trusts are identical there have been numerous issues specific to IS surveillance which are further discussed in the commentaries below.
Such issues also mean that to date it is not possible to draw comparisons between IS and NHS data on MRSA bacteraemia and CDI.
The HPA has produced the fourth publication of tables of counts of MRSA bacteraemia and CDI within those IS organisations who reported between April 2011 and September 2011. Please note that following the introduction of mandatory MSSA bactareraemia reporting in January 2011, this is the first publication to also include a table of counts of MSSA bactareamia.
