The Sentinel Surveillance of Hepatitis began in 2002 with the aim of gathering information on testing for hepatitis A, B and C across all regions in England to inform local and national healthcare planning to reduce the incidence and prevalence of hepatitis. In 2010 the surveillance system was extended to include testing for hepatitis D and E, and in 2011 HIV and HTLV testing were also added.
