The TB research and development activity of the HPA relates directly to its remit to protect the population from infection. Thus the work aims to improve prevention and control of the disease through better diagnostic methods, strengthened surveillance, effective approaches to the control of the disease at the local level (including management of outbreaks), and the production of better vaccines. Almost all of this work involves collaboration across the HPA and with external partners.
Comprehensive listings of peer-reviewed papers relating to this work, published from 2003 to 2008, were compiled for the 2008 Tuberculosis in the UK surveillance report. An updated list of epidemiological publications will appear here soon.
